Mongolia Pics 3: Horses And Arrows.

Our first night in Mongolia was pretty cold, so we had to use the wood-burning stove to stay warm. I was pretty exhausted - and the last thing I wanted to do was get up in the middle of the night just to put more wood in the fire. So my dumb ass stuffed a ton of wood into the stove, hoping it'd last through most of the night. But the wood was so dry that the entire stack burned all at once, turning our ger into a felt supernova. It got so hot that Ted actually had to go outside repeatedly to cool down and prevent what he thought was an imminent heat stroke. I didn't realize how hot it was until the morning ...
--

The heat inside our ger was so intense, it actually melted our candles until they resembled an erectile dysfunction ad.
--

We got up at dawn to look for endangered Argali wild sheep. On the way there, we came across a couple of Mongolian herdsmen with their goats and sheep. Outside the city and towns, most of the Mongolians you come across are nomadic herdsmen and lonely dentists.
--

We spent an hour or two learning that Mongolian bows are very difficult to use, and which friends were still angry about that time another friend puked in their car.
--

Later that day, we got to Hustai National Park. And jumped.
--

I miss the emptiness of this place.
--

You are now looking at a picture of us looking at a picture. Most likely we were checking out the most disgusting photos taken on this trip.

The moment you fly into Mongolia, you pretty much figure out who's their all-time favorite guy. I'd imagine somewhere in Germany there's a Hasselhoff International Airport. And in Amsterdam, the airport's named after the person who invented animal porn.
--

And if naming an airport after him wasn't a big enough hint, maybe constructing a giant Genghis Khan robot is. It's not yet complete, as they're still installing particle beam weapons into his eyes and cruise missiles inside the horse's mouth. But once it's ready, the Mongolians hope the Genghis Khandroid will lead them to a second era of global domination.
--

I promise you that this won't be the only photo of Rog pissing in Mongolia. The man's bladder was perpetually loaded, and he turned the country into his personal urinal. I've never seen a human being pee so much. Monsoon clouds expel less liquid than Rog's penis.
--

We were pretty stoked about spending our first night in a ger, which is a Mongolian yurt. Just as crocodiles haven't evolved much since the age of dinosaurs, gers haven't really changed since the days of Genghis Khan. And like crocodiles, gers never developed windows or a bathroom with modern plumbing.
--

This is what a ger looks like on the inside, and, as my friends magnificently demonstrate, they're surprisingly spacious. In the middle of space was a wood-burning stove. For lighting, they gave us two candles. There was a separate building for toilets and showers. We had to tell them two hours in advance if we wanted to shower, so they could heat the water. I'm not sure if Rog ever bothered to use the toilets - not when there was so much land out there that had yet to experience the wrath of his bladder.

While waiting for dinner, I came across these amazing photos. Apparently it's the first time anybody's ever seen a leopard attack and kill a crocodile. Normally it's the other way around. It's probably because I haven't eaten yet, but these pics are really making me hungry.

For every thrill of victory, there's also tragedy of defeat. This is a photo of a jumping mishap when my foot landed right into a fricking marmot hole, and I had to do a shoulder roll to prevent myself from eating a mouthful of Mongolian dirt. During the entire trip, I'd been trying repeatedly to find and eat a traditional dish called boodog, which is a marmot carcass filled with hot rocks (Unfortunately it wasn't marmot season). So I suppose they were trying to send me a message. But I shall have my revenge!

Coffee talk #100

On my coffee date with Maria, I picked up a cup of joe from Jameson Brown. It's my new favorite coffee place in Pasadena. I don't know what I would do if there were no good coffee near work. Jono (the owner's 13-year-old son) ground some freshly roasted Mexican beans and made my coffee in the French press.
Check out Jameson Brown the next time you're in town. It's a family-run business with a great story. I adore David (the owner) and his son Jono, who is quite a barista. They sure beat the snottie wannabes at some of those hipster coffee joints.
Yeah, I said it.

Seoul Pics 2: Non-Jumping.

During this trip, I managed to squeeze in a weekend at Seoul. It was a toss-up for me between Seoul and Tokyo, which are my two favorite cities in Asia. But the roundtrip tickets for Beijing-Tokyo were $1,500. It was like the airline industry really wanted me to go to Seoul.
The photo above was taken at Volume, which is probably Seoul's most popular nightclub right now. Other than the scantily clad, heavily intoxicated women, I thought the place was just okay. For one thing, I'm not a big fan of dance floors where everybody faces the DJ like he's techno Jesus. Secondly, it's so loud the bartenders can't hear you and automatically hand you well drinks. If you haven't figured it out from my facial expression, the vodka was horrific. You can find tastier liquids inside a dead raccoon on a hot day.

Checked out the opening party for this art gallery that's constructed entirely out of shipping containers. It's not quite ready yet - only three out of the dozen or so containers were up for the party. It's amazing how shipping containers have been a trendy thing to use for constructing businesses, homes, and Korean art galleries. It's just a matter of time before trendsetters build everything out of refrigerator boxes. Soon homeless people won't have anything to use as shelter.
--

This is what the containers look like on the inside. The shiny metal surfaces create a neat optical effect: my right testicle appears to be a Chinese guy.
--

We were taken to this restaurant that's famous for its geijang or pickled raw crabs. Unlike cooked crabs, where everybody eats the legs - the main thing you eat here are the guts and eggs.
--

I think this is the first time I've ever had kalbi at 7 AM. The crazy thing about Hongdae is that this restaurant was packed. Nobody fucking sleeps in this part of Seoul.
--

Don't think I've seen anybody sweat this much while eating dduk bok kee. He could end droughts in some countries.

NC Botanical Gardens and the Merlion

I visited the NC Botanical Gardens today; they have an excellent display on carnivorous plants (even better than what Singapore's Botanical Garden has) plus herbs and poisonous plants too. Some of the popular Sarracenia hybrids were even developed in NC. If you don't know, Sarracenia are pitcher plants, where insects crawl into the plant's pitchers and they end up being digested by the plant! Also in the photo above is a famous venus flytrap. I've posted all the photos on my photobucket album located here:

Afterwards, I headed over to The Merlion Singapore restaurant and tried their Char Kway Teow (which tastes a lot like Chinese Chǎo hé fěn).

I watched "Wanted" tonight; it was okay, but I didn't think it was great. :(
Tomorrow, I'm going to one of the local botanical gardens to shop for some American pitcher plants (sarracenia). Many of them are native to North Carolina and many hybrids have been created. My favorite non-hybrid variety is Sarracenia leucophylla. I'm also planning to stop over and have lunch at the local Singaporean restaurant and try Char Kway Teow (I did not have time to try it in Singapore and my local SG friend tell me it's well done at the restaurant). I've also spoken with a few other people (from Singapore and Malaysia) after I found out it's made with lard, but they all said "that's what gives it it's flavor" and "one plate won't kill you.". Yeah, you'd think I was eating some fugu without knowing if I was allergic to it! :)
